Business Basics for all Filmmakers & Media Producers

Coventry University

Many filmmakers and media professionals run their own companies to formalise their ideas, manage tax liability and share project rewards with collaborators.

As you set out to establish your business, the process requires you to make a series of decisions, ideally based on your research that tells you about your market and industry sector, and an understanding of risks and the regulatory environment.

The course will work through questions and procedures to explore opportunities and the strategies available to make these work for you. How can you find data about your sector? What kind of financing may be available for your company or project? What may be the catch? What are the documents and materials that you need to put together to ultimately build the trust relationship and demonstrate that you brought together the right team that will turn the original start-up into a profitable investment opportunity?

You may want to express your knowledge, sector expertise and core idea through a business plan that clarifies the resource requirements and market opportunities. This makes it easier to find partners and funding. Some of the documentation may be drawn up by an accountant at a later stage, but having all the relevant facts and figures in place will make this a relatively simple – and cheaper – process.
