Capital allowances when you sell an asset

Capital allowances when you sell an asset

When you sell or ‘dispose of’ something you claimed capital allowances on, include the value in your calculations for the accounting period you sell it in.

You don’t need to do this if you give it to a charity or community amateur sports club (CASC).

Dispose of an asset

You dispose of an asset if you:

  • sell it
  • give it away as a gift or transferring it to someone else
  • swap it for something else
  • get compensation for it - like an insurance payout if it’s been lost or destroyed
  • keep it, but no longer use it for your business
  • start to use it outside your business

Work out the value

The value is usually how much you sold it for. Use the market value (the amount you’d expect to sell it for) if you:

  • didn’t sell it, eg you gave it away or you kept it but stopped using it for your business
  • sold it for less than it was worth to someone connected to you

If a ‘connected person’ or a company connected with yours sold it to you for less than it cost them, the value is how much it cost them.

Connected people

Connected people include your:

  • husband, wife or civil partner and their relatives
  • relatives and their husbands, wives or civil partners
  • business partners and their husbands, wives, civil partners and relatives

Your company is connected with another company if you:

  • control them both
  • are connected with a person who controls the other company
  • are part of a group that controls both companies

If you originally claimed 100% of the item

Add the full value to your profits in your tax return if both of the following apply:

This is known as a ‘balancing charge’.

If you have a balance in the pool your item qualifies for

Deduct the full value from that pool if you originally claimed 100% of the item and you have a balance in the pool your item qualifies for.

Add the difference to your profits in your tax return if the value of the item is more than the amount in your pool. This is a ‘balancing charge’.

If there’s a balance left in your pool, you can claim writing down allowances on it.

If you originally used writing down allowances

Deduct the value from the pool you originally added the item to if you used writing down allowances when you bought it.

The amount left is the amount you use to work out your next writing down allowances.

For items in single asset pools you can claim any amount that’s left as a capital allowance. This is known as a ‘balancing allowance’.

If the value you deduct is more than the balance in the pool, add the difference to your profit. This is a balancing charge.

You can only get a balancing allowance in your main or special rate pool when you close your business. You can get a balancing charge in any pool in any year.

If you sell it for more than it cost you

You can only deduct the original cost of the item even if you sell it for more.

If a connected person sold it to you for less than it cost them, deduct either how much you sell it for or how much it cost them - whichever’s smaller.

Add the difference to your profits in your tax return if the value of the item is more than the amount in your pool. This is a balancing charge.

If you close your business

In the year you close your business, enter a balancing charge or a balancing allowance on your tax return instead of claiming capital allowances.

Client testimonials

Without the Growth Hubs help and assistance, we would never have been able to increase our sales & output and also grow our local business. With this help in purchasing new equipment we have expanded our operations and gained a new and increased customer base.

Nuneaton Roof Truss,

Over the past few years, Armstrongs has built up a fantastic relationship with Gary Thyeson from the Growth Hub. His advice on grants and funding has been really valuable to both Armstrongs and some of our clients. His knowledge of local business support has been helpful in signposting us to relevant support agencies as required. We look forward to working with Laura Delahunty moving forwards.

Armstrongs Accountancy LTD,

In the short time since first engaging with the Warwickshire Growth Hub we feel that Laura has understood our vision and has been so very supportive in linking us to the specialist teams who are now supporting us with training, finance and recruitment. MES Systems Limited,

I have had an excellent experience working with Laura from the Growth Hub, from day one, she was taking detailed attention to my concerns and ideas. She was able to put me in contact with different organisations and people to find out answers to my questions and help me to solve some inquiries I was having. I feel this support definitely had a positive impact in my plans.

PALACIOS LTD,

It’s been a fantastic inaugural eight months for the TalentTech Recruitment team and, although the reality of setting up and running a company can be a somewhat daunting experience, we have been extremely grateful for the superb help, advice and guidance given to us along our journey by Gavin Barnett and the team at CW Growth Hub. Gavin’s introductions to both Warwick & Coventry Universities and his wider business network have been absolutely invaluable.

For many individuals out there, it is very hard to figure out ways and know which direction to go when it comes to setting up a business. The challenges of taking your idea and bringing it to life and not knowing where to go and who to speak to for advice. it can get very frustrating..

Over the years since the Growth Hub was set up we have habitually gone to our Account Manager as a one-stop shop for all business-related information.  It has been a really convenient way of finding suppliers, advisors and, on one occasion, we even asked for assistance with finding customers.  We are invited to a wide range of business events including business development workshops, Brexit roundtable discussions, seminars on various topics and have also been asked to speak at some events.  When we have needed additional information, for example, finding finance sources or help with selecti
