Councillors to decide future of Abbey Fields Swimming Pools project

Warwick District Councillors are set to decide whether to continue with the redevelopment of the swimming pools at Abbey Fields in Kenilworth following a significant rise in the cost and time schedule of the programme.

At a meeting of the Cabinet on Thursday 2 November members will consider a report detailing the design revisions that will be required for the new building by Historic England to protect the extensive medieval remains discovered on site and the implications that this will have on timeline and investment needed. They will then be asked to give their authority to entering into a revised contract with the main contractor in order to re-start the building programme. If this is agreed permission will be required from the Full Council to release the finance in order for the contract to be signed.

Councillor Ian Davison, Leader of Warwick District Council commented:

“Councillors have a difficult, but clear choice to make as to whether we go ahead with this project or not. Should they agree to continue, they must decide the maximum price the Council is prepared to pay and close monitoring will be needed to ensure that this is not exceeded.”

More information on the Abbey Fields swimming pools project including 3D model images of the archaeological finds by RiVR.uk can be found on the Warwick District Council website.

The meeting of Warwick District Council Cabinet will take place at 6pm on Thursday 2 November at Shire Hall, Warwick. The meeting will not be livestreamed, but a video of proceedings will be available on the Council’s YouTube channel. The meeting of the Full Council is scheduled for 6pm on Wednesday 15 November.
