Coventry company expecting to raise £10,000 to support cancer support charity at band night

Organisers of a popular charity band night are hoping to raise over £10,000 for a Coventry and Warwickshire charity which provides valuable support for children with cancer and their families.

Deeley Group, a construction, property and development company in Coventry, will be hosting its third charity band night and raising funds for Shine A Light on Friday, November 17 2023.

Shine a Light recently opened a new centre in Rugby and provides support services and a supportive community to children with cancer and their families.

The Deeley Group Band Night raised a record £10,000 for The Myton Hospices last year and the organising committee are hoping to match or surpass that figure this year.

Sam Schoolar, CEO of Shine a Light, said: “We’re extremely grateful to Deeley Group for choosing our charity and the money raised will make a huge difference to the work we do.

“We are always looking to work with businesses, whether that is volunteering or hosting events, and everyone at the charity is super excited for the Deeley band night.

“It is set to raise an amazing amount and as a grassroots charity it will help support us in the months ahead to continue to support children and their families.”

It will be held this year for the first time at Village Hotel Coventry and will feature an expanded line-up, with two acts set to perform.

The new venue means around 200 people are expected to attend the event and it has already proved hugely popular, with all tables sold out and only a few general admission tickets still available.

Singer Sarah-Kathleen Owen will be the first act of the evening, before a raffle and auction featuring a range of prizes donated by local companies takes place to give a further fundraising boost.

Edison, a four-piece band from Coventry, will bring the evening to a close, playing rock and indie classics in their own style.

The Trustees of the Deeley Group Charity who organised the event are Chris Newman, Matt Lynch, Carol Maughan, Lily Chedgey and Ann-Marie Grove, supported by Peter Deeley and Peter Hartill.

Organisers are still looking for donations for the charity raffle, with prizes currently including sport and theatre tickets, spa days and much more.

Carol Maughan, Contract Administrator at the Deeley Group, said: “We look to support a different locally-based charity every year with our band night and we are pleased to be able to support Shine a Light this year.

“Shine a Light is so much more than a charity, it’s a support network which can be absolutely vital to children and their families impacted by cancer.

“We have learned about the incredible work that the team at the charity do, and we know that funding-wise it is very difficult for all charities at the moment, so we hope the money we raise help the charity continue to provide its support services.

“Last year’s event was a huge success and we’re hoping to at least match our fundraising again this year. The organising committee have worked really hard to put the event together and book the fantastic acts we will have performing.”
