Council showcases career opportunities
‘Take a look at the wealth of opportunities that working for your local council can bring’ is the message from Warwick District Council’s Learning and Development Team, in their quest to encourage school-leavers and graduates to take a look at the wide-ranging careers and apprenticeships available with the local authority.
Since its launch in 2018, the Council’s Apprenticeship Scheme has gone from strength to strength, funding opportunities for 29 successful applicants, twelve of whom have gone on to secure permanent roles across a broad range of services including Assistant Accountant, Learning and Engagement Officer, Project Officer, Data Analyst and Licensing Support Officer. Within the corporate scheme existing staff have also secured apprenticeship training allowing them to progress their careers within the organisation.
In addition, since 2023 local students aged 16 plus have been offered the chance to take part in WDC’s work experience programme, enabling participants to gain an insight into what working for local government is like and allowing those with an interest in a specific area such as Media & Communications, Climate Change, Community Safety, Environmental Protection, Green Spaces, ICT, Policy & Development, Technical and Food Safety to get some practical, hands-on knowledge and experience.
Councillor Jessica Harrison Warwick District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Transformation commented:
“There can be few employers that offer such a broad range of job opportunities as Warwick District Council. Our wide portfolio of services means that we have a wealth of career avenues right across the Council, from the theatre and art gallery to planning, licensing, marketing or finance. Increasingly students are looking for an alternative to the traditional further/higher education route and I would strongly advise them to find out more about working for us.”
Daisy who joined the Council as an apprentice in 2020 commented:
“I thoroughly enjoyed my Level 4 Associate Project Management Apprenticeship with WDC. Throughout the process I felt fully supported by my manager and team, gaining invaluable experience of a variety of projects from the introduction of the 123+ waste contract to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games operations. At the end of my apprenticeship, I was successful in securing a Project Officer role for the Assets team. Recently I’ve also become an Apprenticeships Ambassador providing a point of contact with our current
apprentices and organising a series of networking and personal development events.”
Since September the Council’s Learning and Development Team has been out in the community talking to students at careers fairs at Trinity School, Myton School and Southam College. They will also be attending two careers’ fairs at North Leamington School on Friday 18 October from 8.15am-2pm for Years 12/13 and 16 January from 8.15am to 3.15pm for Years 10/11.
