Sponsor support will help young Coventry rugby stars make European trip
The Coventry man who launched a national gambling awareness programme and the rugby-loving duo behind a city barber shop have sponsored Coventry College’s rugby programme for the 2023/24 season.
Aaron Abbott, who set up the Against the Odds to educate young people around the dangers of the gambling industry, has joined Paul and Gary Day who run Scruples barbershop in Jubilee Crescent to sponsor the college’s rugby provision.
The logos of both organisations will appear on the front and sleeve of the playing shirts and back of the shorts, with funds helping to provide opportunities for the rugby squad travelling to their annual Portugal Youth Festival in April 2024.
Aaron, who is a former Coventry College student and rugby team captain, said: “The rugby programme has moved on so much since my time at the college.
“Pete and his team have created a bespoke experience for the rugby players along with their academic studies. I am looking forward to seeing how it continues to grow and I am proud to be supporting it.”
Brothers Paul and Gary are former local rugby players and offered their support after seeing the development of the programme over the years.
Paul said: “It’s great to see the rugby programme at Coventry College growing from strength to strength.
“They provide a unique experience for the players including travelling to the annual Portugal Youth Festival and playing regular fixtures throughout the season and we were more than happy to support the next generation of players on their player pathway.”
Coventry College Rugby Academy Manager Pete Glackin said: “Aaron was an integral part of the college rugby programme between 2008-2010 as well as being captain.
“When Aaron visited us he was amazed at the progress we have made and wanted to offer his support. Having this backing from Aaron and showcasing the Against the Odds message is fantastic and we want to thank Aaron for his continued support.
“Paul and Gary are big sports and rugby union supporters in Coventry and it is brilliant to have them on board. We are extremely grateful that they are supporting us this season.”
