The Burning Issues of Energy & Waste Management

35 local organisations made their way to the Ricoh Arena on June 18th to find out how they can take control of their organisations energy and waste to save money. The event which was part of the Coventry and Warwickshire Green Business Network which is part funded by the ERDF included an opening session from Denise Osborne, Green Business Programme, who presented details on the funding opportunities available to SMEs in the local area for low carbon processes.

Dr. James Bridges who is a Sustainability Consultant at the Coventry & Warwickshire Green Business Programme provided delegates with some top energy saving tips. Attendees learnt about the five stages to effective energy management, including how to understand and analyse their energy consumption, how to go about installing energy efficient technologies, how to track progress and how to report on this progress.

Businesses then discovered solutions for waste management that are provided by Coventry City Council from Jennifer Taylor who is City Waste’s Sales Manager. Jennifer provided an overview on what waste is recycled; top tips for saving your business money, how to move towards a circular economy and latest waste legislation updates.

The day concluded with a comprehensive presentation from Martin Brocklehurst, who is the Chair of the Midlands branch from the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management. Martin’s passionate presentation warned us all of climate change and plastics challenges facing us over the next 20 years and that for any business to survive in the future they will have to adopt a circular economy approach.
