Foleshill Trail launched

A new trail, which celebrates Foleshill Road as one of the most vibrant and multicultural roads in Coventry, has been launched.

The Foleshill Mile is the culmination of nine months of community engagement with 21 different community groups and features stories of people moving to Foleshill from across the world to start new lives in the city.

The groups have worked together to co-create a map of their favourite places in Foleshill Road and co-designed a walkable trail, with transport routes, food tips and personal stories of their experiences.

It has been created as part of Coventry’s Great Place Project which is being delivered by the Coventry City of Culture Trust in the run up to 2021 and is ideal for friends and family visiting Coventry who want to experience authentic food, culture, shopping and heritage.

Coventry City of Culture Trust’s Community Connector Navkiran Mann has worked with local communities in delivering the trail.

She said: “It’s so nice to see this come to life after great consultations and workshops with some of the people who live and work in Foleshill.

“Foleshill Road has always been a magical place of wonder for me. As a child, my father would go to Tahim Drapers to get new turbans as well as beautiful Indian fabrics for my mum to create shalwar-kameez dresses. I remember being enthralled by all the colours and designs which were not available anywhere else in the city.

“We’d sit in the window at the Standard Sweet Centre and eat his favourite traditional Punjabi dish ‘sholay patorey,’ and it would make me so happy to sit there with my family and just enjoy this street.

“This trail brings to life many stories that are just like mine associated with this historic and bustling area, and I’m looking forward to it being discovered by a whole new generation of people.”

You can pick up a copy from the Tourist Information Centre as well as various venues across the city, or you can visit https://coventry2021.co.uk/great-place/ to view the digital version.
