Pair of Europe's standout tapestries on show as part of new tour in Coventry city centre

A stunning historical treasure in the West Midlands is giving visitors the chance to marvel at two of Europe's most remarkable tapestries and uncover centuries of captivating history.

Situated in the vibrant heart of Coventry's Cathedral Quarter, St Mary's Guildhall is inviting guests to embark on a journey through seven centuries of rich history with its immersive history-inspired group experience – the Tale of Two Tapestries.

The guided tour combines a visit to St Mary’s Guildhall Coventry and the world-famous Coventry Cathedral, offering a unique opportunity for groups to discover the rich history of two extraordinary tapestries: the largest tapestry in Europe located in Coventry Cathedral, and the Coventry Tapestry, the oldest tapestry still in its original place after 500 years.

Groups can prebook the Tale of Two Tapestries tour, held on July 8, September 16 and October 7, and explore the intricate craftwork and vibrant colours which have stood the test of time, with expert guides revealing enchanting stories woven into the fabric of the two masterpieces, as well as their historical and spiritual significance.

The combined tour is for groups of 10 or more and lasts approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, with the opportunity to indulge in a cream tea afterwards featuring a freshly-baked warm scone with jam, cream, and a pot of tea in Tales of Tea, the Guildhall’s atmospheric vaulted ceiling restaurant.

Abi Moore, Heritage and Venue Manager at St Mary’s Guildhall, said: “We are excited to launch this new group tour bringing together incredible history at two iconic venues, all within a few minutes’ walk.

“We are always looking to bring new audiences into the guildhall and the city, and we feel this will be an essential part of any day out in the West Midlands, especially for history lovers.”

Carla Crawley, Head of Tourism and Engagement at Coventry Cathedral, said: “We’re thrilled to be partnering once more with St Mary’s Guildhall to showcase just some of the rich and varied history of Coventry.

“Our new joint tour will allow visitors to explore two fascinating buildings and to hear the stories behind each tapestry along the way, including some fresh perspectives on these significant works.”

The recent major package of restoration and refurbishment at St Mary’s Guildhall has been made possible through the Cultural Capital Investment Fund resourced by Coventry City Council, Arts Council England, and the Government’s Getting Britain Building Fund through Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership, and with the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to National Lottery players.

The Tale of Two Tapestries Tour is available from £12 per person and must be booked in advance. Find out more and book by emailing traveltrade@noordinaryhospitality.com
