Tudors to star in half term family activities celebrating all things spring at historic hidden gem in Coventry
A medieval Coventry venue is helping families celebrate spring like the Tudors with exciting trails and craft activities all inspired by real history.
St Mary’s Guildhall in Coventry’s historic Cathedral Quarter is drawing on Tudor May Day merriment this half term with a series of activities celebrating the end of winter and the return of warmth, sunlight and new life.
May Day was an important festival for the Tudors and seen as the first day of summer and a time to make merry with feasting and dancing. It also saw nature celebrated by collecting flowers and making garlands to symbolise fertility and rebirth.
From May 27 to 31, living history sessions with Tudor experts featuring hands on activities in the guildhall’s impressive Medieval Kitchen will see visitors getting to grips with Tudor May Day celebrations – including making a willow crown to mark the new season.
And until June 2, guests are invited to discover the secret behind the mysterious green men throughout the building, decipher their meaning and collect a prize.
There will also be an opportunity for guests to make their own pipe cleaner flower bouquets and green men masks as part of a creative family day out.
Abi Moore, heritage and venue manager at St Mary’s Guildhall, which is operated by No Ordinary Hospitality, said: “Our venue dates back to the 14th century and the Tudors have played an enormous role in its history, so it’s brilliant to be drawing on some of their traditions and helping families of today celebrate spring and the natural world.
“Our half term activities cater to a variety of ages and interests, so there’s always plenty to do throughout the week, and we’re really excited to be sharing these new activities and helping families have a memorable day out this half term.”
